Breaking the 4th Wall

Postby JGMadisonW » Wed Jul 21, 2010 11:04 pm

Yes, I understand the sentiment, but I have seen it done well!

I submit: "Duck Amuck" Daffy is continually terrorized by the artist, including perilous situations and a head surrounded by daisy petals.

In the end, Bugs breaks the 4th wall with a simple "Ain't I a stinker?"

See? It can work.

Duck Amuck is classic. The Ratchet & Clank and Sam & Max games do it well to.

The key to breaking the fourth wall is doing it only when it fits and not for the sake of simply doing it. Family Guy is an obvious example, but I'll go a little more less obvious. For a short while, I was a fan of the cartoon "Chowder". I felt the storylines were funny and the animation was good. However, the creator quickly caught on to the fact that some of the fans favorite moments in those first 10 or so episodes was when they would break the fourth wall and acknowledge the fact that it was a cartoon. So naturally he made sure to insert at least one in every episode. It quickly became an annoyance in the second season, and lost it's charm somewhat to me.

Outside of that being my favorite cartoon ever, I can even tie 4th Wall Breaking into one of my favorite wrestling "feuds" ever:

Grant Morrison's Animal Man run is a good example too.

Fight Club (the movie) is an incredible example of breaking the fourth wall. It's one the movies where I absolutely love that aspect of it.
