DC Universe Online

Postby TheHunter » Wed Jun 06, 2012 5:12 pm

Since it was brought up on EG+ by Doc, and was mentioned in a thread or two here, I decided to give a quick briefing about the game.

It's an MMO developed by SOE, it's available for free on PS3 and PC (With a monthly subscription option or a separate DLC packs one time only fee). It's set as its name says, in the DC Universe.

Before you start getting your hopes up, it's set in an alternative reality to the DC Universe and not the new 52 and is not canned to it. All bets are off in this game as it's completely uncanned to anything recently released.

Anyway, here is the trailer (No spoilers, this is the trailer that you get before you create your character).

To explain whats happening (Some spoilers from the comic book released for the game titled DCUO Legends, and some game spoilers, but nothing endgame):

Basically, Lex Luthor attained high level of technology with the help of Braniac. The tension between Heroes and Villians has turned into an actual global sized war. During the trailer you watched, Lex puts up a plan to force Superman (Who is flying near the Sun to recharge his powers) to return to earth. During which, he kills Superman.

Afterwards, Brainiac unveils his plan and unleashes a full global sized attack on earth killing everyone: Heroes, Villians and Civilians. Lex, now backstabbed, decides he wants revenge.

Sooooo, he puts up a resistance group and sneaks into Brainiacs ship, steals exobytes (Big spoilers: Tiny bugs that can steal superpowers) and return in time and unleashes them to the world pre the Brainiac attack. So, ordinary men and women around the world gain super powers. Here is where your role comes in: You will join either the Heroes or Villians to put out Brainiac.

Currently, this is the first story arc so to speak. It ended with the release of the third DLC pack in March.

I enjoy the game a ton, give it a shot, here is the site:

P.S.: It's enormous, so take it easy on the download.

P.S.S.: Just to throw it out there, I am a Villian called CMBlake in-game (PC Player) on the US server (Doesn't matter if it's PVP or PVE). Hope to see it around!

Thought I'd come back and liven up the thread a little with a few n00b questions, if anything it'll be cheap entertainment.

So, I just downloaded DCUO for the PS3, and I was wondering whether anyone's heard anything, good or otherwise, about the DLC packs. I've played the game before at a friends and I liked the look of it, but I thought it it be worth asking if the DLC was worth a punt.

(It should be noted, that I'm not the one paying for it, but obviously, I don't want to waste the money that I'm owed on lame arse content)

Awesome, you have given me a reason to open up my book of DCUO wisdom.

Also, I am sorry I haven't replied until now: I have had no internet connection since the 2nd of July as I have been off on a vacation ... [face_whistle]

I have 3 of the 4 current DLC packs (I played the 4th and newest pack "The Last Laugh" during my 1 month long membership) and I played the majority of the stuff in 2 of them, so here goes nothing:

Legend -

FL - Fight For The Light (The First DLC Pack) - http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/fightforthelight/

LS - Lightning Strikes (The Second DLC Pack) - http://www.dcuniverseonline.com/lightningstrikes/

BE - Batle For The Earth (The Third DLC Pack) -

LL - The Last Laugh (The Fourth DLC Pack) -

Alright, each DLC pack is basically involved with one main tier in the game (You know ... end game tiers like in WOW and other MMO's?) FL is mainly involved with Tier 1 and Tier 2, LS is Tier 2.5, BE is Tier 4 and LL is PvP Tier 3 (And 4, Haven't hand much chance to play it and I am not much of a PvPer).

The thing about the game is it's grind-based once you hit level 30. The DLC add extra content to grind in and give a bigger storyline exposure. LS is pretty much the most separate DLC from the storyline and BE is the most involved one (It's the only way to play T4 PVE content so far).

As you progress through the endgame content, you will need to go through the order to get the best out of the packs.

I am not going to bore you with the exact content of raids and such as really, it's just bonus group-based content (Take note that T 2.5 is only playable through LS and I doubt that they will ever change that since its open world rather than closed-instance group based, T4 will eventually have more F2P options but you will have to give it time).

What I will focus on is what comes with each pack: Classes, or in the case of DCUO, powers.

FL comes with Hard-Light, green lantern/sinestro corps ring power.
LS comes with Lightning.
BE comes with earth power.
LL didn't come with a power, but rather a weapon-type; shields.

You need each pack to create characters with that power (Or change your current characters power to that power, changing also requires extra RL money).

If you haven't been playing for long and don't plan to go super hardcore, you probably won't reach any BE content any time soon (It's not only T4, but it's a very high leveled content).

You can always gets membership (Legendary membership) during which you have access to ALL the DLC packs. Although I own all the packs except the LL from previous purchases, I think getting membership has much MUCH more benefits to it than separate DLC's. Only downfall is: It's recurring membership.

So overall - Are the DLC's worth it for a casual player? Probably not. They are $10 each and are fun to play with, and unless you are somewhat already into the endgame content, they are worthless for players prior to level 30 and with combat rating lower than 34.

I probably complicated the living fuck out of you, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
