About an hour into their iPPV tonight, word spread around the internets that there was a fuck up and by going to ROHWrestling.com and clicking the iPPV banner you would be taken directly to the HD legal stream of the show, without being asked to sign in or for any form of payment.
It must have been a glitch, as a huge portion of the ROH fanbase were entitled to the show for free as a make-good for the last iPPV technical fuck up, however the show was not supposed to be free to the general public. Given all the intentional freebies, and this, I think it's safe to say ROH lost their ass on yet another iPPV.
I was one of many who caught the show for free as a result. I missed the Cole vs. O'Reilly hybrid rules match, which was apparently an amazing star making bout for both, despite lame faux-MMA rules.
The story of the show was probably Steen's post match promo. ROH actually had an interesting angle for the first time in months, as Steen viciously (and accurately) buried ROH NYC douchebag fans for turning on world class talent when they become champion (Nigel, Davey, Tyler Black), cheering Steen's banishment from ROH, but then cheering him as an outsider, and also for chanting for Bryan Danielson and CM Punk at ROH shows. It was a genuinely interesting heel promo where he challenged the fickle ROH crowd. It felt like something that wouldn't have been out of place during Gabe's peak - creative and believable, but not a tacky worked shoot. The crowd completely ruined it though, ironically, as they cheered louder and louder with every insult Steen threw at them. In a way, you could make the point that their smarky ahead-of-the-curve reaction completely vindicated Steen's promo about them, but you could tell he was BEGGING to get booed and they were just in it to amuse themselves. He even went as far as to try and get cheap heat by specifying that he hated the NYC crowd but that got the pop of the night.
If, like me, you're the type of fan who hates douchey smart crowds who boo guys like Rey Mysterio just for being faces, this crowd was like nails on a chalkboard tonight. They put a downer on a great angle.
Anyone else catch the show?
